This paper presents the results from a study of testing internal deterioration of concrete due to frost action. Different types of Portland cement concrete manufactured in Sweden and Germany with water-cement ratios of 0.32, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7 were investigated for internal deterioration. The freezing-and-thawing test was in principle in accordance with the Swedish standard procedure. Three different non-destructive techniques: dilation, relative UPTT (Ultrasonic Pulse Transmission Time), and relative dynamic modulus, were employed in the study for detecting internal damage. The water up-take with and without freezing-and-thawing action was monitored. A destructive test for flexural strength was carried out to verify the deterioration measured by the nondestructive techniques. The results show that all the three non-destructive techniques can be used for evaluating internal deterioration due to frost action. The relationships between different test techniques are discussed.
