Twenty two (22) stable selections along with their 8 parents of sesame were subjected to correlation study on the loss in seed viability due to storage for one year in ambient condition with degradation in different biochemical parameters. Path analysis of loss in seed viability was also made to detect probable responsible degraded components. Though abrupt reduction in seed viability was recorded for all the genotypes, higher magnitude for the same was recorded against R-9, B-9, T-12 and selection 8, but the same in oil content was against HT-1, and selections ― 11, 17 & 19. T-12 also showed higher decrease in both crude and soluble protein components. Reduction in both unsaturated fatty acid components: oleic and linoleic was higher against selections ― 1, 4 and 9. The positive direct effect on loss in seed viability was exerted by degradation / loss in oil content, total carbohydrate and arachidic acid. Considering the direct effects in both the direction as well as indirect effects, breeding for genotypes tolerant to loss/degradation in oil content, ascorbic acid, total carbohydrate and all the components of fatty acid profile may lead to selection of genotype(s) resistant or tolerant to loss in seed viability and ultimately the seeds of new recombinants can be preserved for a relatively longer period with minimum loss in oil content.
