Calcium hydroxide crystals constitute about 20% to 25% of the volume of solids in hydrated cement paste. It is generally assumed that the calcium hydroxide is weaker than the C-S-H, thus providing a preferential fracture path. However, the role of the calcium hydroxide in determining the strength and fracture properties of concrete is in fact far from clear. In this literature review, the effects of the calcium hydroxide on both normal and high strength concretes are examined.
