Free calcium oxide in Portland cement, if present in larger amounts than acceptable, causes an expansion of the hardened cement paste due to its topochemical conversion to calcium hydroxide. The kinetics of this process depends on the burning conditions, in particularly on the maximum burning temperature. The expansive force generated by the CaO → Ca(OH)_2 conversion may reach a magnitude of ≈150 MPa.
