The deregulation of the electricity market has required transmission network owners to maximise efficiencies in operating and maintenance costs and to adopt initiatives to minimise capital expenditure. Upgrading of transmission lines to provide increased transfer capacity is one initiative that can provide for deferment of significant capital expenditure. This paper reviews investigations into uprating of a 110 kV double circuit tower line to a single circuit 275 kV arrangement. This arrangement gives a significant increase in the power transfer. The existing 110 kV suspension and strain tower bodies and super structures are retained, but with new cross arms fitted and existing conductors reused. The following aspects are examined in detail - ground clearance, insulated cross arms, radio interference, audible noise, electromagnetic fields, lightning performance and community issues. Even though the case studied was uprating a double circuit 110 kV tower line to single circuit 275 kV, the concept can be applied generally.
