High Anisotropy Dendritic Growth in a Viscous Melt

Experiments on cyclohexanol were carried out to study free dendritic growth in a highly anisotropic and very viscous melts. Material was purified by a combination of directional solidification and zone-refining. Experiments were designed and performed for measuring growth velocity and tip radius of purified cyclohexanol. These results are compared with similar measurements of succinonitrile and pivalic acid. Experimental results reported here for cyclohexanol for a system that has twenty times higher viscosity and approximately ten times larger anisotropy than succinonitrile and a lower entropy of fusion.
