Industrial boilers are in widespread in China. The total installed industrial boilers in China reaches 501,200 sets. The average capacity of a single boiler is 1.6 MW. The average efficiency is 60-65 %. The use of industrial boilers brought serious environmental pollution. Retrofit is necessary for increasing efficiency and reducing emission of pollutants. However, attention should not concentrate on advanced technology only in retrofit of the industrial boilers in China. It is necessary to take an overall consideration of technology of industrial boilers, the demand of economy and environment in different areas and in different periods of time. The purpose is to seek approaches for development of boilers suitable for the Chinese situations. The paper describes briefly the current status of Chinese boilers. It has established systems and models for making technical, economic and environment assessment of the Chinese industrial boilers. The authors designed several proposals for retrofit of industrial boilers, and use models to make calculations and analyses. The paper describes the layout, investment and benefits of nation-wide retrofit of industrial boilers.
