BEST AVAILABLE TECHNIQUES FOR THE TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL OF SEWAGE SLUDGE IN FLANDERS

While the amount of sewage sludge in Flanders is increasing, the use of sewage sludge as a fertiliser or soil conditioner as well as sludge disposal by landfill have become subject to more stringent environmental legislation. As a result, alternative systems for the treatment and disposal of sewage sludge have to be taken into use. In order to support and guide the introduction of these new systems, the Flemish authorities asked the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (Vito) to select the BAT (Best Available Techniques) for treatment and disposal of sewage sludge. The BAT selection was based on expert judgement of technical feasibility, environmental benefit and economical feasibility, ha this paper, some results of the BAT evaluation are presented.
