New Developments in P-aramid Short Fibre Reinforcement of Rubbers

P-aramid fibrillated short fibres (pulp), Dipped Chopped Fibre (DCF) and Chopped Fibre (CF) are increasingly being used as reinforcing materials in rubbers. The performance of rubber goods can be enhanced greatly by the addition of small amounts of these fibres, often in a way which is impossible with conventional paniculate fillers or with other fibres. Typical advantages associated with their use include high low-strain modulus, design flexibility, anisotropy in technical properties and stiffness, ease of processing, improved tear/ creep/cut/abrasion resistance, lower energy loss, flame retardance and increased maximum service temperature. This paper reviews the design considerations and end use applications of these materials in tyres, transmission belts, conveyor belts, hoses and profiles.
