Quality Of Service Primitives for Operating System Support Of Multimedia Applications

Multimedia applications are bursty by nature i.e. they require a greater percentage of available resources for short periods of time. General-purpose operating systems incorporate a policy of fair scheduling, that is, all processes receive their fair share of the resources based on their priority. In this paper, we present and implement a technique for creating an interface in the operating system that allows a multimedia application to dynamically upgrade or downgrade its- importance or Quality of Service (QoS).
