Thermal Degradation and Flame Retardancy of Epoxy Resins Containing Microencapsulated Flame Retardant

The ecological safety of polymer flame retardant has become a major subject in the modern polymer industry, and there is an nternational demand for the control of polymer flammability without the use of halogenated additives. Consequently, current research is mainly ocused on looking for environmental friendly additives in the form of organophosphorus compounds, which are being thought as the alternatives of the halogen containing flame retardants . Among the organophosphorus flame retardants, caged bicyclic phosphates such as melamine salt of bis(2,6,7-trioxa-1-phosphabicyclo[2.2.2] octane-4- methanol) phosphate (Melabis), intumescent flame retardants, have attracted many interests, and many investigations have been done about them . In recent yeas, a novel phosphate tri(2,6,7-trioxa-1- phosphabicyclo [2.2.2] octane-1-oxo-4-methanol) phosphate (Trimer), another caged bicyclic phosphate, has been reported, which is another effective flame retarant. However, it is lack of nitrogen as a ntumescent system while an enhancement of flame retardancy was also observed by introducing nitrogen into a phosphorus flame etardant system . This problem could be solved by the technique of microencapsulation. In this paper, microcapsules of Trimer with melamine resin shell were synthesized. The Trimer microcapsules were then applied to epoxy resin to get flame retardant EP, which had a very good flame retardancy, whose thermal behavior was performed with thermogravimetric analysis.
