Eucalypt plantations in southern China are generally very healthy. Some 282 insect species, almost all endemic, were recorded in 2001 as compared with 206 species in 1991, and 53 species in 1981. The most serious pest groups are subterranean termites,geometrid defoliators, and leaf-roller and root-feeding scarab beetle larvae. Most insect damage has been to young trees, usually in the first year after planting, and to the nursery stock. By 2010, there will be 2 million ha of eucalypt plantations and 5-7% of them will be damaged by the pests. The estimated annual cost of the damage is US1-2 million dollar.
