The corrosion resistance of surface-modified T22 steel for use as superheater tubes in waste incinerators was evaluated by laboratory and field corrosion tests. The specimen surface was coated with a Ni-30at. percent Cr-15at. percent Al film approximately 10pm thick by unbalanced-magnetron (UBM) sputtering, and then preoxidized for 12h at 1000 deg C in dry laboratory air. Laboratory corrosion testing was conducted by coating with synthetic ash in a gas mixture of 1000ppmHCl-50ppmSO_2-10 percent O_2-10 percent CO_2- 20 percent H_2O-bal centre dot N_2 for 100h at 550 deg C. The preoxidized specimen showed virtually no thickness loss due to corrosion, indicating excellent corrosion resistance in the laboratory corrosion environment for 100h.
