A new generation of presses specially for the production of carbide tips is introduced along with the first results obtained in practical application. The concept incorporates essential innovations allowing for the small lot sizes, thus meeting the requirements of the hard metal industry with regard to minimum set-up time and maximum precision to reduce the expenditure in subsequent grinding. The user can benefit from a new dimension of precision and reduced set-up time. Tool change is carried out in the press, and the required precision of the press as well as economic efficiency are for the first time obtained without expensive die sets (tool adaptors). Thanks to opposing compaction linked with an absolutely stationary die, new measuring systems, closed-loop control and maximum rigidity of the press by special wear-resisting guide mechanisms, positive cutting tips can be finish-pressed with tolerances of only a few 1/1000 mm, without danger of tool break. Quick-clamping systems for the tool and an interface for automatic tool identification constitute the basis for fully automatic tool change. A new concept of machine programming ensures fastest and convenient operation as well as optimization in the production of parts, so far as possible far independently of the press operator. The new generation of presses is ideally automated with a robot system for automatic removal and deposit of the compacts, quality control, stacking of sintering trays, and cleaning of pressing tools.
