The operation of a magnesium plant coupled with both a carbochlorination plant and a titanium sponge plant presents challenges not experienced by primary smelters of magnesium. The most significant are the return of magnesium metal in the magnesium chloride feed, the contamination of the magnesium chloride with titanium sponge and maintaining the material balance. The cyclic nature of the titanium industry also presents operational and economic challenges that must be addressed continuously.
