The glycerophosphoinositols derive from membrane phosphoinositides by two successive deacylation steps: the first is catalyzed by a phospholipase A_2 and leads to the formation of lysophosphatidylinositol, the second involves a lysolipase that hydrolyses the fatty acid in position sn-J of the glycerol backbone, thus forming the glycerophosphoinositols [1-4]. The cellular metabolism of these compounds, as well as their role in modulating G protein-coupled signalling enzymes and the actin cytoskeleton organization, will be discussed in the following.
