Acoustics have been the subject of numerous studies, dating as far back as prehistoric times when ancient archers discovered their bowstring made pleasant sounds. Again, in ancient times, shepherds fashioned rudimentary flutes from reeds and gradually the science of acoustics developed into the art of music and way beyond. The ancient Chinese, Hindus and Greeks began to study acoustics on mathematical lines; indeed the word itself is of Greek origin.
