Although silos of circular planform have always been built with vertical walls, the use of inclined walls is expected to reduce wall pressures and frictional tractions, leading to more efficient designs. Very limited information currently exists on pressures on and the benefit of conical silo walls. This paper thus presents a new theory for the pressure distributions in conical silos. This theory is based on the traditional slice method by assuming that the stored solid is all at active failure, with due consideration of the variation of the vertical stress both down the height and across the horizontal plane.
