Microbial influenced corrosion (MIC) - A Case history

Microbial influenced corrosion (MIC) is used to describe corrosion reactions where presence and activity of microorganisms are involved. The cost of corrosion has been estimated to 1-5% of the gross national products in the US and UK. MIC is reported to account for 20% of the total cost of corrosion. Within the oil and gas industry it is further estimated that 40% of all internal pipeline corrosion is attributed to MIC.
