Hip replacement is a surgical procedure to replace a disease joint by a prosthesis increasing patient's mobility, improving the function of the hip joint and relieving pain as well. The femoral stem is the modular component that fits, in one of its extreme, inside the femur, and the other with the femoral neck/head system. In the particular case of orthopedic implants, micro-motions are known to occur at points of fixation at the stem/bone interface. In presence of synovial fluids, these junctions are exposed to deterioration, fretting-corrosion phenomena has been identified as the main degradation mechanisms caused by small amplitude relative displacement or vibration, load and the surrounded environment. Calcium phosphate is currently used in uncemented hip prosthesis to achieve the adhesion with surrounding tissue and calcium titanate has been proposed as a coating for biomedical applications. However, their behavior under tribocorrosion conditions and specifically under fretting-corrosion conditions has not been studied yet. Therefore, the aim of this work is to evaluate the tribochemical performance of calcium phosphate and calcium titanate coatings under fretting-corrosion conditions.
