Pipeline failure management

The ongoing and rapid development of pipeline systems requires an equally rapid development of new management strategies, as the performance of ageing pipelines are subject to ever greater scrutiny. Moreover, the current economic climate is one that demands a reduction in unreliability of pipeline systems due to 3rd party damage, corrosion and other mechanically induced failure mechanisms. This paper describes a Pipeline Failure Management strategy for improving the performance of ageing pipelines which identifies, evaluates and quantifies the probability of failure occurring. A methodology is also presented which can be used to assess both the probability and consequence of failure to establish a detailed risk model.
