A series of creep and fatigue tests was carried out on soft and hard rocks in Japan. As a result of these tests, failure would be anticipated in a creep or fatigue process of a rock as the strength of a rock deteriorates in continuous loading or cyclic loading in the lower stress levels of a rock. It is very interesting to know the deterioration state of a rock in these processes. We have developed a testing procedure called the "creep/fatigue loading and after load increasing test (CALI/FALL test)." By the testing procedure, a complete stress-strain path of the failure process of creep or fatigue loading of a rock can be obtained, and the current residual strength along any point of the path can also be determined. Finally, the deterioration state of the strength of rock in creep or fatigue loading has been clarified by these tests.
