This paper highlights the statistical approach toward Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) mix design. Concrete is viewed as a bi-component composite of a sand-powder mortar matrix and a coarse aggregate. For a mortar of given Water-Powder ratio (W/P) it was found that the mortar is linearly depending on the Sand-Powder ratio (S/P). The consistency of the concrete mix is controlled by the mortar consistency, i.e. by the mortar fluidity and by the coarse aggregate content. This implies that the concrete consistency is depends on the S/P ratio and on the Sand-Total Aggregate Ratio (S/A). To reveal the influence of these to major factors on the concrete consistency- by SCC Slump flow test, the composite method of design of experiments was employed.
