At the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, IL, the reliability and continuous operation of a 450mm (18 inch) O forcemain was of utmost importance. In February of 1998, the Navy Public Works Center was faced with two breaks in the subject 25 year old ductile iron force main piping. Not only did this threaten the Navy's continued operation of their pump station, there were also environmental concerns as the pipeline is located under a lakefront access road and is very near a recreational beach area on the shore of Lake Michigan. Using best value engineering, the Navy Public Works Center chose to mitigate their problems and provide system life extension through the use of a cured-in-place lining system designed specifically for pressurized piping systems.
