The paper presents a means by which engineers and agencies can design for more than stresses alone; they can consider the full range of service life concerns. A series of concrete exposure categories have been defined that permit the structural engineer or agencies to define a level of performance within a specification. By asking the right questions and responding with appropriate answers, the engineer or agency chooses the pertinent characteristics in an "al a carte" manner as they pertain to the environmental exposure or demands of the structural element and environment. Twelve different characteristics of concrete are considered at three performance levels each.
