The Electrolytic decomposition of sulfamate nickel plating baths leads to the formation of dissolved impurities. These impurities cannot be removed by conventional methods. New equipment designed for removal of ammonium from sulfamate nickel baths uses hybrid electrodialysis technology (utilizing specialty membranes), enhanced by a proprietary technique, to effectively recover the sulfamate nickel plating bath. The membranes preferentially allow the passage of the contaminants versus the normal bath constituents. Once the plating bath is recovered, greater than 90 percent of the plating bath components remain in the bath, while greater than 95 percent of the contaminants are removed. Plating quality of the recovered bath is equivalent to a new make-up.
