Coatings and surface modifications represent an approach to implementing alternatives to environmentally unacceptable chromium coatings. Suitable replacements must exhibit the desired combination of properties, such as appearance, wear and corrosion resistance, and hardness without adversely affecting the substrate materials. Corrosion resistance is a key parameter for evaluating candidate alternatives. The corrosion performance of coatings and surface modifications, applied by a variety of wet and dry methods, is reviewed for some of the candidates under consideration for use in industry and the military industrial base. Some electroless nickel and HVOF thermal spray inorganic coatings show promise as replacements for chromium.
