This paper discusses the results of the initial evaluation of a galvanic type, long life battery specifically designed as a power supply for impressed current cathodic protection (CP) systems. The evaluation is being conducted under laboratory and actual field conditions. Laboratory and field tests are designed to monitor the performance and determine the actual service life of the battery. For this purpose, several batteries are being tested under different connection arrangements to simulate the most common cathodic protection power requirements. Each test arrangement was equipped with automated data acquisition equipment. In addition, the field sites were provided with on-site telemetry for remote monitoring. Performance as well as economic considerations are discussed.
