An advanced corrosion monitoring technique was introduced several years ago. This new technique is based on metal loss measurements of a corrosion probe. In this paper, field trial results of the new corrosion probe system are presented. Corrosion rates in flow lines on an offshore platform are measured with the new corrosion monitoring technique and with the Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR) technique. An excellent agreement is found between both techniques. The new technique is compared to the conventional Electrical Resistance (ER) and LPR techniques. It is shown that the new technique compares very favorably with the traditional techniques in terms of measurement sensitivity and accuracy. The corrosion probes provide a much faster response than ER probes (at least 100 times), the fast response becoming comparable to that of the LPR technique. But ER probes are very sensitive to temperature variations. Laboratory experiments are conducted with the new corrosion probes to determine the stability of these probes to temperature changes. It is shown that the temperature noise is dramatically reduced compared with ER probes.
