Parapets in buildings are complex in shape and are subject to strains and deformation caused by temperature changes and other factors. At the same time, high durability and good appearance are essential requirements of parapets. In this study, the application of the YAG laser for welding thin stainless steel sheets for use as parapet in buildings was studied using both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels. It was found that high speed welding at speeds of 1000mm/min was possible for both types of stainless steels. Welding distortion was minimized by the used of pulsed power. In addition, discoloration of the weld could be prevented. These characteristics facilitate the subsequent painting process of the welded components. Also, it was found that laser welding offers the advantage that there is no limitation in the design of curved parts.
