A study of complexity in engineering design

摘要

This paper examines the notion of complexity in engineering design in the context of an operational model of the design process. Possible metrics for design complexity are reviewed. Case studies are presented to highlight characteristic features of the search for solutions of complex design problems and to elucidate the nature of designers' responses to such problems. The value of visual displays via cognitive maps and strategy networks to the understanding and management of complex design problems is emphasised.
