Controlled release of anti microbial drugs is an effective means of treating periodontal disease. In this work we present a comprehensive reaction diffusion model that accounts for the 3 principal mechanisms governing the release of drug from biodegradable ion exchange matrices such as the PerioChip device: diffusion, reversible adsorption of the drug onto the matrix, and enzyme catalyzed degradation of the matrix, which is inhibited by the adsorbed drug. Our model equations consist of a diffusion equation with a source term, which is coupled to 2 non-linear ode's. We used the Galerkin FEM to solve these equations and analyze the release of drug from such devices as a function of the relevant physicochemical parameters. Preliminary results compare favorably with experiment.
