A series simulation by CFD and physical modeling on fluid flow, mass and heat transportation is steel continuous casting tundishes have been carried out. More than 40 years the steel continuous casting tundish was considered as a metallurgical reactor working under isothermal condition. Authors found by CFD simulation that tundish flow in most cases must be treated as a non-isothermal reactor due to the existence of temperature difference between transport ladle and tundish. The critical conditions when the non-isothermal flow in tundisch can't be neglected have been found by CFD simulation and water model test. A direct measurement in a 40t tundish has confirmed simulation results.
