REENGINEERING THE SUPPLY CHAIN: THE ONE-SITE SOLUTION

The supply chain is a network of activities that are undertaken to transform raw materials into the final products and services provided by the firm to its customers and end-users. To effectively manage the supply chain, the firm must continuously analyze these activities to determine 1) whether or not they add value to the products/services and 2) whether they should be done in-house or outsourced. The analysis should lead to incremental, continuous improvements and/or radical, reengineered changes. In this paper, we describe a project recently undertaken by the Business Critical Computing Systems Manufacturing division at Hewlett-Packard Roseville to reengineer the manufacturing process for its Enterprise (Unix) Servers. Basically, the changes involved collecting several processes performed by various HP and non-HP organizations into a single site. The new processes eliminated or significantly reduced many redundant and inefficient activities involving transportation and storage of materials. Process flows were simplified, and the abilities of communication and information systems were enhanced. The change has resulted in beneficial time- and cost-savings for Hewlett-Packard.
