Masonry arch bridges have been utilized for thousands of years as roadway, river and stream crossings. They can be made up of worked or rough hewn stone, with or without mortar. The classic and organic look of a masonry arch bridge allows for the structure to blend in well with its natural surroundings. This paper will look into the rehabilitation and strengthening of two different types of masonry arch bridges. The Seatuck Creek Bridge carries the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) over a tidal creek in Eastport, New York. It was constructed in 1892. The structure, a single span masonry arch, has a clear span of 4.88 meters and a width of 10.97 meters. The load bearing element is a 610 mm thickness of common brick with a cyclopean concrete backing. The sandstone masonry abutments and wingwalls are founded on timber mats and 6.10 meter long timber piles. The backfill is shallow, less than 910 mm, and the bridge carries a single, non-electrified track. The available plans were illegible and there were no records of any repair work to the bridge.
