The paper investigates the drift at axial failure of R/C shear-critical columns tested under high axial load and repeated load reversals with increasing displacement. The tests discussed in this paper were part of a NEES Grand Challenge research program to study the risk of collapse of older reinforced concrete buildings during earthquakes. One of the primary goals of this column study was to learn about the difference in the failure mechanism of columns that experience simultaneous shear and axial failure, and those that are able to sustain axial load past the point of shear failure. It was found that the main parameters in the axial failure model adopted in ASCE/SEI41/06 addendum do not properly reflect the failure mechanism of this type of columns.
