A review is made of the introduction, application and productivity gains of plasma arc keyhole welding of stainless steel tubing in the Norwegian offshore petroleum industry. Extension of the technology to shipbuilding is discussed. A study of keyhole stability in aluminium confirms that 6-7 mm is the maximum thickness in all positions except vertical-up. Finally the welding of a high pressure spherical gas sampling container is described.
