Large scale data acquisition management: MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel project

The Massachusetts Water Resource Authority is constructing a 17.6-mile long, deep-rock pressurized tunnel, the MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel (MWWST), to replace the aging Weston and Hultman aqueducts, which currently provide drinking water for Metropolitan Boston. Pressure tunnel projects require timely and detailed information regarding rock type, integrity, discontinuities, and water inflow for liner, safety, and contract quantities considerations. Mapping is performed on 100-foot intervals at a scale of 1 inch to 10 feet and using a cylindrical developed view. In order to facilitate the collection and management of large quantities of tunnel mapping data, Hager GeoScience, Inc. developed GeoScan-32~(TM) to provide integrated graphical and text data entry. This system is used to generate reports on geologic conditions for the tunnel design team. It can also be used to archive geologic data for future research.
