We have developed an interdigitated microarray (IDA) electrode for the purpose of studying electrode reaction mechanisms in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The IDA electrode was fabricated by photolithography in our laboratory. Deposition of the metal was performed by sputtering Pt or Pt-Ru alloy on a SiO_2 / Si substrate. The objective of using the Pt or Pt-Ru / IDA electrode is to detect reaction intermediates or products during alcohol oxidation. In this work, we report: (1) electrochemical detection of proton during methanol electrooxidation, and (2) electrochemical detection of acetone during 2-propanol electrooxidation.
