When extrusion coating a polyethylene, any change made in air gap dynamics (melt temperature, air gap length, line speed) may change that polymer's coating properties, e.g., heat seal strength. Such changes in coating properties are dependent upon the polymer's molecular properties, including chain branching. And, one involved in extrusion coating must optimize his extrusion conditions, including air gap dynamics, to gain the best end use properties from a polyethylene.
