Australian coal mines emit significant fugitive methane and increasing efforts are being made by mine operators to mitigate the greenhouse effects. Trials to use the energy in the methane for various purposes have been carried out and some major facilities have been built. Methane is produced either as very low concentration gas in mine ventilation air or medium to high concentration gas from gas drainage systems. One of the major difficulties in effective utilisation of the methane is the variability in supply and concentration. These have been documented for australian mines with detailed examples of typical mines.
