Prevention and Mitigation of Marine Pollution in Coastal Areas

The coastal areas represents the interface between the land and the sea, it is of great e-conomic and environmental significance but also, is under increasing pressure from rapid urbanization, increase pollutant discharge and resource allocation conflicts. As we approach the new millennium, it requires a shift in our concepts, approaches and methodologies in managing coastal pollution and maximizing the resources benefits. Integrated Coastal management (ICM) is a continuous and dynamic process that unites manager, scientist, public and stakeholders for the sustainable use, development, protection of coastal resources and environment. In this paper, Xiamen, one of the rapid economic growth areas of China Coastal city, will be taken as an example to address the technologies such as Integrate Environmental Impact Assessment (IEIA) and use of information Technology (IT) in ICM for prevention and mitigation of marine pollution.
