Since 1970's, different types of male sterility have been introduced or identified in cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) in China. Characteristics of flowering, seed setting and combining abilities of these male sterile materials were investigated. In 1978, we introduced a male sterile material with radish cytoplasm. This material showed excellent male sterility. However, it was accompanied by serious problems of chlorosis of seedlings at low temperature, abnormality of pistils and bad seed setting. In 1981, another male sterile material of cabbage with Brassica nigra cytoplasm was introduced from University of Wisconsin. It has normal green leaves at low temperature.
