Experimental demonstration of an achromatic photonic crystal waveplate

We have experimentally demonstrated that two-dimensional (2D), dielectric photonic crystals can display a large, nondispersive birefringence over a considerable frequency range below the frequency of their fundamental band gaps, where they are transparent.
