Description and Analysis of Atmospheric Dispersion Tests Conducted by EPA at the DOE Hazmat Spills Center

This paper describes the analysis and results of a series of carbon dioxide releases which were performed for the Environmental Protection Agency by the Desert Research Institute and the Western Research Institute at the Department of Energy's Hazmat Spills Center in Nevada. The primary purpose of the experiments, which were conducted in collaboration with the Petroleum Environmental Research Forum (PERF), was to provide a data set suitable for validation of dense gas dispersion models in neutral and stable conditions for low momentum, ground-level continuous (long-duration) and short-duration releases over smooth terrain. PERF/WRI conducted a separate series of releases at the same site, using a similar instrument array, which involved the placement on the test site of a uniform roughness array and an enhanced roughness pattern, both of which were made of "billboard-like" roughness elements.
