The dissolution behaviour of complex carbonitrides and capped precipitates present in microalloyed steels, during the simulation of weld HAZ thermal cycles was studied. EELS mapping was successfully employed to demonstrate the existence of caps on particles responsible for precipitation strengthening (10-30 nm in size), HREM was used to determine the interfacial coherency between cap and base particle. The redistribution of the constituent elements in typical particles following weld HAZ thermal simulation is also shown.
