The Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) permits the imaging of insulating and/or hydrated specimens without prior sample preparation.Images of such systems show useful contrast,which does not appear to arise from the conventional sources (namely,suface topography and mean atomic number variation).It is suggested that this additional contrast arises from differences in secondary electron emission from the different phases of the sample,as determined by the electronic and dielectric properties of the phases.
