In mid eighties utilities began to apply microprocessor technology for the protection and control of high voltage transmission systems. The new digital technology is slowly being used to replace obsolete electromechanical relaying systems. Manyutilities have adopted their own philosophy to replace the aging relaying systems. In general, however, the replacement is justified based on one or more of the following criteria: lack of spare parts, or deterioration of relay performance, or economicsavings in testing and maintenance. In addition, digital technology offers many advantages like lower cost, less panel space, self-monitoring and self-checking, continuous self-diagnostics, local and remote communication to obtain fault records, etc.In addition to protection use, microprocessor chip's are also used for programmable logic controllers (PLC), remote terminal units (RTU), sequence of event recorders (SER), digital fault recorders (DFR), revenue metering and panel meters and communication multiplexers.This paper will present an assessment of the Y2K readiness of the New York Power Authority for the use of intelligent electronic devices (IED) for the protection and control of the power system elements.
