For the re-establishment of multi-functional soils after opencast mining of brown coal the rapid formation of a favourable humus and nutrient balance in young mine soils plays a central role. Organic waste materials like sewage sludge or compost could be used as soil improvers supplying mine soils with organic matter and nutrients. However, concentrations and totally given amounts of nutrients and contaminants, their turnover in the soils, their transport with the seepage water and their transfer into crops have to be considered. In this paper results of two lysimeter trials are presented, comparing soil properties, above ground biomass production, amounts and quality of seepage water and heavy metal contents of crops for typical mine soils and a natural soil, treated with different amounts of sewage sludge and compost down to a soil depth of 30 cm.
