Enforcement programme concerning a voidance and recycling of waste at non-ferrous metal smelting plants and foundries in north-rhine westphalia

The statutory obligations anchored in the Immission Control Act have particular relevance to the avoidance and recycling of waste from industrial installations subject to licensing in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Immission Control Act, these types of installations being significant generators of waste. The strategy of the North-Rhine Westphalian authorities responsible for enforcing these regulations is discussed below. The following account contains a description of the implementation plan for the avoidance and recycling of waste launched by the Ministry for the Environment, Agriculture and Regional Planning in the State of North-Rhine Westphalia amongst non-ferrous metal smelting plants and foundries operating within the state. In North-Rhine Westphalia, some 635 smelting plants and 270 foundries for non-ferrous metals generate around 278,000 tonnes of solid waste and around 120,000 tonnes of waste water per annum. The following account will also outline the latest findings of expert studies aimed at increasing the recycling rates.
